Short Description

Year: Mfg-1992 Model-1992 Mfg: DELTA Model: Expedition Type: Motor Yacht Expedition Top: With Flybridge Open W/Bimini Speed: 11 knots / 13 knots Engines: 2xCaterpillar 3508 900 HP Staterooms: 5 Overview She is one of the finest examples of an ocean going expedition yacht in the world today. Launched in 1992 by world famous Delta Marine of Seattle, Washington. She has a full displacement fiberglass hull and a cruising range of 7,000 nautical miles. Her raised focsile bow combined with immensely strong construction makes her an ideal adventure yacht in all weather and sea conditions. Her global cruising construction incorporates structural and mechanical features beyond any found in yachts other size and class. Remarks She was launched in 1992 and proclaimed one of the worlds finest expedition yachts. From 1992 through 1996 the ship traversed the globe traveling thousands of miles. In 1996 while sailing in a remote area of , she struck a reportedly unmarked reef causing a disturbance to its port shaft seal assembly and partial interior flooding. Immediate remediation was undertaken including treatment of main engines and generators in preparation for factory authorized repairs. She returned to Seattle where her owner chose to not only repair the damage but to use this time to undertake a substantial refit renewing all systems, including complete new interior and all new interior sub systems. The refit included main engine and auxiliary machinery removal and rebuild by Caterpillar, electrical renewals by Eltec, as well as substantial design improvements in space utilization, interior woodwork, cabinetry, and exterior finish quality by Venture Pacific Marine. She was completed in August of 1998, and has been heralded as one of the worlds premier expedition yachts. The reported cost was in excess of 16 million dollars in 1992, and today's replacement cost of this one of a kind vessel would be substantially more due to the increased costs of material and labor. She is one of the finest examples of an adventure yacht in the world. The ships redundancy, commercial quality, sea keeping characteristics and quiet operation blend together with her natural elegance to create a voyagers dream.

Hull and Deck

Construction She has combined elegance with world cruising operational characteristics. All of the exterior doors feature full ocean watertight multiple dogging fixtures. The large picture windows spoken of earlier are of the heaviest construction and are designed for full ocean operation. The 2" thick solid fiberglass construction and heavy insulation combined with the engine room aft design affords tremendously quiet operation whether running main engines or just generators. While underway the only noise one hears while sitting in one of the pilot house viewing seats is the movement of the water as it separates around the bulbous bow. The solitude and minimal machinery noise found aboard this vessel is a goal that most other yachts only dream about. The hull is designed for all waters including deep ocean cruising. Unlike the majority of vessels which bury their bows with minimal sea conditions, the LARAs combination of raised focsile and bulbous bow enable her to transit in almost all weather conditions. This ability increases her cruising time three fold over other vessels her size. The exterior surfaces including all decks are entirely of fiberglass and stainless steel. This construction allows for minimal maintenance thus reducing annual maintenance costs dramatically. LARA's Sterling Paint system is Midnight Blue on the hull and brilliant Matterhorn White on the house. Deck and Hull LARAs anchor system is designed for world operations. Boasting two 1200 pound anchors with nine hundred feet of chain per anchor allows for dependable anchoring in almost all conditions. Individual hydraulic drives for each anchor winch combine with hawse pipe washdown systems for reliable and efficient operations. The ship is designed with five control stations from the bridge, port and starboard wings, flybridge, and aft control station for deep sea fishing or stern docking.

Engine Information

Mechanical There are 14000+ - 8000 hours remaining till the main engines are due for rebuild (CAT recommends 22,000 for full rebuild). Exhaust systems are routed to exit below the water line. New shafts were installed (Aquemet 22), one in October 2006 and another installed in January 2007. An Asea Unit was installed in October 2003. A new air conditioning system was installed in October 2004. Mechanically the vessel is built to ocean going commercial standards rarely found in vessels of her class. Her large fuel capacity gives her a phenomenal range of over 7000 miles. The twin Caterpillar 3508 series engines are combined with twin disc omega variable speed gears allowing the vessel to cruise at 12 knots or troll down at speeds of one knot. In addition to her 75 KW Caterpillar 3306 generators (± 4000 hrs; rebuilt by NC Power Oct 2006) she is fitted with an on deck emergency generator and emergency switchboard feeding all crucial mechanical elements as required by international passenger safety regulations. The six inch diameter shafts and eighty inch diameter propellers are commercial quality and size, and far exceed other yachts of this class. Redundancy in piping allows for operational backup rarely found. Plumbing systems such as gray and black water tank wash downs allow for easy maintenance and cleaning. Large centerline tunnels allow for miscellaneous equipment installations and access to longitudinal conduits and pipe runs. Stabilizers were upgraded to a dual ram system (Naiad 220) in May 2003, giving exceptional riding characteristics. New seals and bearings were installed in November 2007. Many unique elements were included in her design, one example being decks designed to collect and filter tropical rain water back into the fresh water supply, supplementing the water making capability. Ultraviolet light was installed to purify the fresh water system. The yacht has a built in high pressure wash down system that is plumbed throughout. Additional exterior deck systems include remote fire stations, remote fueling stations, high pressure air, fresh and salt water. There are individually powered hydraulic capstans port and starboard, fore and aft. Specialized built in tie down systems accept ¾ inch eye bolts for customized tie down requirements for various deep sea operational requirements. Her auxiliary equipment is of the highest quality and boasts unusual redundancy. The hydraulically driven bow thruster system reaches a maximum three hundred and fifty horsepower. Her rudder system is of commercial design with 100% backup as required by international safety rules. LARA carries four cranes, each boasting individual hydraulic power supplies and load ratings specially designed for at sea deployment and retrieval of the ships sport fishing boats and tenders.

Navigation and Electronics

Electronics and Navigation The pilot house is equipped with world class electronics and excellent redundancy. This includes long range ARPA radars, Black box radar, GPS systems, and extensive communications equipment including, aircraft, VHF, SSB, Satellite, and more. Fleet 77 was added in 2004.The pilot house windows are designed for all weather commercial application including multiple wipers and clear view screens. Closed circuit cameras watch over the engine room, stern, top, and side decks. Electrical Electrical systems include individual systems for e-lighting, 12v, 24v, emergency generators circuits, and more. The LARAs electrical redundancy is far in excess of both yacht and commercial standards.

Cabin and Berth

Accommodations Whether forward in the private library area, amidships in the owners private den, or aft in the spacious lounge enjoying the fire in the fireplace there is an air of intimacy and spaciousness. The interior is of the finest northwest burled Madrona with cherry accents. Jatoba hardwood flooring picture frames her inlaid marble designs and light toned wool carpets. Natural fabrics and wall coverings exude a refined yet understated elegance that befits an expedition yacht of her stature. The vessels interior has a spacious yet intimate feel. Her full beam master suite including his and hers en suite baths are designed with light marbles, textured wall fabrics, and burled Madrona with cherry trim. With similar design her guest staterooms exude elegance and comfort featuring marble desks, fine cabinetry, and walk in cedar closets. Many yachts not designed for ocean cruising have master staterooms on the main deck forward. The LARA designers understood that this is the roughest location on a vessel at sea, and they chose to place their staterooms centerline below decks in the most motion friendly position for an ocean going vessel. The entire main deck is surrounded by expansive glass viewing windows that frame the majestic beauty of nature this vessel was designed to explore. The flybridge accommodates a large party and includes a hot tub, barbecue and seating area. There are large walk in freezers, cold boxes, and storage areas that allow for intercontinental provisioning. The vessels design includes numerous locations for sportfishing and other expedition equipment. Spacious exterior deck areas include full walk around lower decks and a large aft boarding area. The large dining room, which seats up to twelve around her inlaid walnut and cherry table, boasts the same ability to blend elegance and nature in a world class setting. The fine woodwork combines the right touches of soft radius curves, light nautical touches such as arched inlaid panel doors, and satin finishes for a pleasing blend with the natural fiber carpets, inlaid marble flooring and cabinetry tops.
